Lucent Technologies says it has completed an upgrade of Verizon Dominicana’s CDMA2000 1x infrastructure, upping the network’s capacity to one million subscribers. Lucent says the project will also improve network efficiency and reduce operating expenses and real estate costs for the operator.

A subsidiary of the US telco of the same name, former monopoly operator Verizon is the dominant provider of telephony services and internet access in the Dominican Republic. Earlier this year Nortel Networks upgraded Verizon’s entire network to 1x technology; the cellco has since begun trials of Nortel’s EV-DO 3G solution in a number of regions.
