The Chilean arm of Mexican telco Telmex has contracted technology provider Cisco to implement the first IP-based 10Gbps ethernet network in Chile. The metropolitan IP/MPLS network will cover the Santiago area with a total capacity of more than 300Gbps. Telmex says the new network is in response to demand for transmitting large volumes of data from corporate clients as well as the public sector, including education and health.
Elsewhere, Telmex confirmed its interest in entering the Chilean mobile market. It has been linked recently to a possible takeover bid for the country’s smallest cellco, Smartcom, owned by Spanish power company Endesa.
