MTN wants to be first to 3G… just as soon as it gets 2.5G out of the way

5 Jul 2005

MTN Nigeria is confident of launching the country’s first 3G mobile service, possibly as early as the first half of next year. The cellco’s South African parent, MTN Group, launched 3G services in its domestic market last week and says that Nigeria is next on its list. MTN remains the only Nigerian operator not yet offering 2.5G services and has much work to do if it is to steal a march on its rivals. Whilst Globacom (Glo Mobile), NITEL GSM (M-Tel) and Vee Networks (V-Mobile) have all launched GPRS commercially, MTN is still trialling the technology.
