Tele2 begins network trials; pencils in September launch

30 Jun 2005

Sweden’s Tele2 says it has begun trials of its GSM/UMTS network in Croatia, ahead of a proposed commercial launch in September. The network currently covers only the capital Zagreb, but Tele2 has agreed a three-year deal to roam over the nationwide network of rival VIPnet, a subsidiary of Telekom Austria.

The Tele2 consortium paid USD40 million for its dual GSM-1800/UMTS licence in December last year – the third such 3G concession awarded there. Croatia is home to 4.4 million people and its existing 2G operators VIPnet and T-Mobile Croatia (formerly HTmobile) had signed up over 3.21 million subscribers between them at the end of 2004, a cellular penetration rate of around 72%.
