Mexico’s largest mobile operator Telcel has revealed a massive jump in SMS traffic in the first three months of 2005. According to a BNamericas report, Telcel carried three billion messages in the first quarter of this year compared to one billion in the final three months of 2004. In addition, traffic has grown ten-fold over the past three years, from 3.3 million messages daily in 2002 to 33 million messages a day now. Telcel says the introduction in 2003 of SMS roaming between Mexico’s four mobile operators provided a big boost to the popularity of messaging. Data services, including SMS, now contribute 9% of Telcel’s total sales. Telcel, which is owned by América Móvil, dominates the Mexican wireless market, controlling over 75% of the country’s 40 million subscribers.
