Indian handset market worth USD2 billion

India’s mobile handset market was worth INR88.05 billion (USD2 billion) in the year ending 31 March 2005, according to an annual report by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). It reported that GSM handsets made up 84% (USD1.7 billion) of the total, with manufacturer Nokia capturing 62% of the GSM phone market, Samsung in second place with 11% of GSM sales, and Motorola in third with 9%. In the CDMA handset sector, LG was the undisputed leader with a market share of 59%, followed by Nokia with 17.6% and Samsung (6.3%).
