Telecom Italia has announced that it is currently engaged in tests of a 50Mbps broadband service and predicts that the technology could be commercially available within ‘a few years’. Telecom Italia chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera told daily La Repubblica that, alongside the trials, the incumbent was looking at ways of upgrading the capacity of fibre-optic cabling to homes from the current 4Mbps to 100Mbps. There are currently more than four million broadband subscribers in Italy, with Provera claiming that his company is now signing up 30,000 new users a week.
