The Japanese equipment manufacturer NEC has been handed a contract by China Netcom for the construction of an extension to the East Asia Crossing 1 (EAC-1) undersea cable network. NEC will install around 350km of cable to provide a landing extension at Qingdao; the initial capacity of 40Gbps will eventually be upgraded to 1.28Tbps. The EAC-1 system, which connects China with major Asian cities, is owned and operated by China Netcom’s sister company Asia Netcom.
