24 Jun 2005

Porta Celular, the Ecuadorean mobile subsidiary of Mexican powerhouse América Móvil, is facing a lawsuit over allegations that it over-billed 1.8 million users to the tune of USD344 million. According to Jorge Zavala Egas, the lawyer representing some of the users, the over-billing is alleged to have occurred between the periods March 2000 to 2005. Porta is accused of charging customers from the time they hit the send key until the moment the call ended, effectively adding between ten to 20 seconds on the duration of each call. The Telecommunications Superintendent will hear the plea in order to weigh up the case for proceeding with the lawsuit.
