Operators challenge cable burial law

Fixed line operator Telefonica (Telesp) and power distributor Eletropaulo have revealed plans to take legal action if a law comes into force which will mean that both companies will have to bury all their overhead cables in the city of Sao Paulo. The law was approved by the city council on 9 June, and is waiting for final approval from the mayor, which is due by 8 July. Eletropaulo said that the cost of burying its cables will come to around BRL55 billion (USD23 billion). There are currently around 24,000km of overhead cables in Sao Paulo.
