South African cellco MTN is due to launch 3G services on 26 June, according to broadband consumer interest website MyADSL. Although MTN has not provided any details regarding its services as yet, a document was posted on the site saying services will be available in the Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Bloemfontein central business districts by the end of the month. The post claims that 3G voice and data tariffs will be the same as current charges for EDGE and GPRS services, with video calling free for a promotional period. MTN’s biggest rival Vodacom launched commercial 3G services in December last year.
