América Móvil says ‘more 3G please’

24 Jun 2005

América Móvil has called upon the Mexican telecoms authorities to consider the case for issuing licences for third-generation (3G) networks in the country. Its finance director Carlos Garcia Moreno cited the introduction of advanced services in Europe and the US and said that Mexico should not fall behind in this area. In response, Jorge Arredondo, the president of the telecoms regulator Cofetel, said that the auction of UMTS spectrum would begin when operators formally requested it, adding that Moreno’s statement concerning the development of 3G elsewhere in the world did not constitute a formal request.
