Ofcom and BT shaping the future of fixed line sector

22 Jun 2005

Ofcom will next week publish its plans for the future regulation of the telecoms industry, promising a strong focus on creating a level playing field in the fixed line market dominated by incumbent telco BT. Ofcom’s proposals will be crucial to the future of BT and the two have been cooperating on the formulation of the new regulations since February, when the under pressure incumbent committed itself to a restructuring that would improve the treatment of its competitors. Ofcom has demanded that BT deliver workable proposals on ensuring quality of access to the last mile and there remains the possibility that it could refer the telco to the Competition Commission if it fails to comply.
