Cosmoté offers i-mode via 3G

16 Jun 2005

Greek mobile operator Cosmoté has made its i-mode service available to 3G customers, becoming only the second operator in the world to offer the multimedia service patented by NTT DoCoMo to UMTS users, alongside the Japanese cellco itself. Cosmoté launched its commercial third-generation (3G) mobile network – the country’s first – in time for the opening of the Athens 2004 summer Olympic Games in August. The network covered 30% of the population at launch, focusing primarily on metropolitan Athens, Thessaloniki and other major cities, and areas hosting key Olympic venues such as Patra, Volos and Heraklion in Crete. Coverage has since been extended to 46% of the population and the operator plans to install a further 250 3G base stations before year end.
