Regulator accuses Porta of using illegal billing methods

Ecuador’s telecoms market supervisor Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Suptel) has accused mobile operator Porta of employing illegal billing methods. In an official press statement the watchdog claims that Porta is in violation of the country’s telecoms laws for charging users from the time that they finish dialling to place the call, rather from the moment the connection is actually made. If the allegations are substantiated Porta could face a fine, although Ecuador’s antiquated Telecommunications Act means the figure could be as little as USD200.
