Telecom New Zealand has contracted Lucent Technologies to expand its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network to all main cities and towns by the end of this year. Lucent has already deployed the operator’s 3G Mobile Broadband network in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other primary tourist spots, and will now roll out new EV-DO-enabled base stations to virtually every major city or town in the country. The latest expansion deal builds on the original EV-DO agreement signed by the pair in June 2004 and will be funded within the telco’s existing capital expenditure allocation. Telecom launched a limited 3G service in November 2004.
