Hutchison promises 3G thriller later this year

14 Jun 2005

Hanoi Telecom, a joint venture between Hong Kong’s Hutchison Telecommunications and Vietnamese state-owned Hanoi Telecom Company, has reported that its plan to launch 3G services in Vietnam by the end of the year is still on track, although indications are that the service will initially be limited in both geographical coverage and functionality. Hanoi, operating under a 15-year business cooperation contract, received government permission to roll out a CDMA-based network in January 2005 and subsequently announced plans to launch commercially in October. It intends to extend 3G services nationwide in early 2006 and is aiming to win a 20% share of the country’s mobile market within three years.
