DTI: ‘We wanna be startin’ somethin’ (in terms of EU e-business)’

14 Jun 2005

The head of European ICT policy and regulation at the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has told the EEMA e-business trade conference that the UK will use its forthcoming European Union presidency to push for stronger e-business initiatives across the continent. Whilst Nick Hickson refused to comment on the specifics, he made it clear that the UK will push for greater disparity across Europe in terms of broadband connection speeds, increased funding for the new ‘i2020’ online public services initiative whilst ensuring that the terms of the 2003 EU Telecoms Package are fully met, therefore consolidating regulation of the telecoms sector and ensuring a level playing field. The UK begins its one-year presidency of the EU on 1 July.
