MTC-Vodafone has announced that it has signed up the one-millionth subscriber to its eeZee pre-paid mobile service. Around three quarters of the cellco’s users are currently on pre-paid plans. Kuwait’s largest cellco by subscribers, MTC-Vodafone has made a considerable effort to expand its portfolio of value added services in a bid to win new custom. Motorola was awarded a USD4.6 million contract to roll out MTC-Vodafone’s GPRS network in June 2002 and services were launched in September. The cellco added multimedia messaging services (MMS) to its portfolio in December 2002 and is developing a unified messaging service that integrates telephone, fax and e-mail services; it is also working on a system which will enable pre-paid subscribers to transfer to post-paid and vice-versa. MTC-Vodafone added EDGE to its portfolio in 2004 and made the country’s first test 3G call in February 2005; no commercial UMTS launch date has been set.
