Fixed line monopoly expires

13 Jun 2005

Telekom Serbia’s period of exclusivity over the provision of fixed line services expired yesterday although the state reports that, as yet, no one is expected to challenge its dominance in the market as the Telecommunications Agency, which is authorised to issue licences and nurture competition, has not yet begun operation. The body elected its board on 23 May but is not expected to get under way for another six to twelve months. Under the country’s Telecommunications Act, Telekom Serbia could eventually be divided up into three separate entities – one each for fixed line, mobile and internet services.
