8 Jun 2005

Spanish mobile operator Telefónica Móviles España has demonstrated the country’s first HSDPA service, which is eventually expected to provide end-user 3G speeds of up to 14Mbps. Telefónica says it is planning to have HSDPA prototypes available by the end of this year, with a commercial launch of the technology planned for mid-2006. The telco says it will install HSDPA across its UMTS network which will incorporate 5,000 base stations by end-2005 and 13,000 by 2008, by which time it expects 40% of its subscribers to be using UMTS handsets.
