Movilnet, Venezuela’s second largest cellco by subscribers, has contracted US vendor Starent Networks to provide key infrastructure for its CDMA2000 1x and 1x EV-DO networks. Starent will focus on the upgrade of Movilnet’s pre-paid data services, supplying its ST16 platform to improve service delivery. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
Movilnet is a wholly owned subsidiary of national PTO CANTV. Its range of wireless services includes voice-mail, call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, message waiting indicator and mobile data solutions using cellular digital package data (CDPD) technology. It plans to invest around USD230 million in new technologies by the end of 2007.
