Swisscom to lose last-mile virtual monopoly?

6 Jun 2005

Swiss fixed line incumbent Swisscom Fixnet looks set to lose the last remaining facet of its former telecoms monopoly after the Senate Committee voted to give alternative operators unrestricted access to the local loop. The vote followed a similar poll by the House of Representatives last autumn, and the full Senate is now preparing to rule on the issue. Swisscom itself has argued against the idea of opening up the last mile, saying that it would discourage major infrastructure investment in the future. All fixed line telecoms customers in Switzerland, regardless of their service provider, currently have to pay Swisscom a monthly access charge.
