BT Wholesale is teaming up with UK MVNO Virgin Mobile to trial digital TV via mobile phone for four months this summer. The service will be tested by 1,000 users in London featuring content provided by Sky News, Sky Sports News and music channel Blaze, as well as 50 digital radio providers. The trial will utilise digital audio broadcasting-enabled handsets and Virgin Mobile says the service will feature an electronic programme guide (EPG) and interactivity options as standard. Microsoft and Arqiva (formerly NTL Broadcast) are also assisting the project.
Meanwhile, BT has appointed Nortel Networks as its main supplier to deploy a nationwide communications network for the UK Ministry of Defence. The Defence Fixed Telecoms Service contract could be worth as much as GBP1.5 billion (USD2.7 billion) to BT. Nortel will be providing multi service switching and VoIP solutions as part of the agreement, valued at USD42 million.
