Telstra Mobile has signed up its five millionth i-mode mobile internet subscriber, marking a milestone for the telco. i-mode technology was launched by Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo in 1999, and is now the world’s largest mobile internet service with around 50 million subscribers worldwide.

In a separate story, ISP LiNet has revealed plans to install its own voice equipment in Telstra exchanges, to reduce its reliance on the former incumbent. The company currently has its own DSL equipment installed in exchanges, but resells Telstra’s voice services in its broadband telephony bundles.
