Tata takes ‘Walky’ into new circles

Tata Teleservices, the telecoms arm of investment conglomerate Tata Group, said this week it is planning to invest INR25 billion (USD570 million) to expand nationwide fixed-wireless services to six million connections by 2008. The planned rollout would extend its services, under the ‘Walky’ brand, to 20 circles, and bring Tata’s total fixed-wireless investment to over INR40 billion (USD918 million). The telco also says that it has complied with government regulations on fixed-wireless technology by setting restriction zones to ‘lock’ Walky handset users within a local radius.
