Uruguay trumpets pre-paid service

31 May 2005

State-owned fixed line operator Antel plans to launch a new pre-paid service next month, according to reports from local newspaper El Pais. The new service should help subscribers from falling into debt with the operator: the proposed pre-paid system allows users to pay a monthly fee for a certain amount of minutes, as well as providing the option to buy pre-paid cards with additional minutes if required. Antel has over a million lines in service and local telephony penetration of around 84%. It plans to invest up to USD60 million this year, up 20% on the figure spent in 2004, including money set aside to upgrade its PSTN.
