Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to stop developing 2G handsets after this year, and concentrate instead on its FOMA 3G services. The cellco said that there are two new 2G models due to be released this year, but once they have been released that will be it. NEC Corp, Panasonic Mobile Communications and several other handset manufacturers have already ceased their research and development operations for new 2G handsets. In a bid to boost 3G take up, DoCoMo has been launching a range of new models at cheap prices, including one without a camera and one with music player functions. It has revealed plans to introduce a 3G handset made by Nokia later this year, a first for both companies.
