27 May 2005

Newly licenced cellco Econet Wireless Kenya – together with three of its partners, Econet Wireless International, Econet Wireless Ventures and Econet Wireless Global – has launched a suit against the country’s information minister Raphael Tuju for KES79 billion for alleged slander, after he claimed that the cellco lacked the financial capability to roll out a network in Kenya and hinted that it obtained its concession under questionable circumstances. The companies are seeking USD989 million in damages for alleged injury to the Econet Wireless trademark which has caused them loss of business. The law suit also outlines a further KES73 million which the operators want for ‘malicious falsehoods’ against the Kenyan cellco.
