France’s smallest mobile operator has launched EDGE-based high speed data services for its business customers. Bouygues Telecom, which holds one of the country’s three UMTS 3G licences, has opted to invest in an EDGE upgrade in the short term rather push ahead with its 3G rollout, claiming that next-generation technology is not yet ready. Both of its rivals in the French mobile market, Orange and SFR, have already switched on their own UMTS networks. Bouygues says consumer EDGE services will be introduced in October. Its EDGE networks currently have 85% population coverage.
