Mobile and broadband expected to be big at Telecom

26 May 2005

The chairman of China’s largest fixed line operator China Telecom has revealed that he expects mobile and broadband services to be as important to the company as its traditional wireline business within ten years. Wang Xiaochu says he is forecasting that each of the three sectors will be contributing around a third of the company’s turnover by 2015. China Telecom does not yet have a mobile telephony licence but the company is expected to be awarded a 3G concession when the government finally awards next-generation licences. Broadband services currently bring in around 9% of the firm’s total sales.
