The New Zealand subsidiary of international wireless operator Vodafone is slowly losing market share to its sole rival in the country’s mobile market, Telecom New Zealand. Vodafone says it added 60,000 subscribers in the three months to the end of March to give it just under 1.9 million customers and a 55% share of the market, while Telecom reported net additions of 64,000 over the same period. This is the second quarter in a row where Telecom has beaten Vodafone’s customer growth. Dow Jones reports a Vodafone spokesperson as saying that Telecom’s launch of a 3G network last November has “intensified competition in the market”. Vodafone intends to introduce its own 3G product in July.
