Hola Paraguay has awarded Alcatel a contract for the expansion of its GSM/GPRS infrastructure, with the specific aim of increasing network capacity and updating existing technology. Alcatel will provide its Evolium Global Solution, including new base station subsystems, updated network subsystems and a new microwave system expansion, as well as applications, including a new intelligent network platform, SMS and WAP gateway. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. Hola, majority owned by Japan’s KDDI, was the first operator to offer digital GSM services in Paraguay when it launched a commercial service in the 1900MHz frequency band in May 1999 under the banner Vox. It also owns and operates a PCS 1900MHz network, deployed by Alcatel, in and around the capital Asunción.
