Slim chance to throw Mexican hat into Chile

Mexico’s América Móvil has confirmed its interest in entering Chile’s mobile market, according to BNamericas. According to the reports, América Móvil, owned by national magnate Carlos Slim, registered its brand name in Chile last Friday. In the absence of a Chilean mobile licence the company is thought to be considering one of two routes into the sector: buying spare spectrum belonging to Telefónica’s local arm Movistar Chile when it is returned to the regulator, or acquiring Smartcom, the country’s smallest mobile operator. Slim already has interests in the Chilean fixed line market through Telmex, which offers voice and internet access services, and Chilesat, acquired by Telmex in April 2004.
