People’s to focus on voice not data

24 May 2005

China Resources People’s Telephone (People’s) has announced that it will invest most of its 2005 HKD200 million capex budget on increasing capacity for cheaper pre-paid voice services, rather than launching new data services; some of the money will be ploughed into improving coverage and signal reception in buildings. People’s is one of two wireless operators in the country to not have a 3G licence, relying instead on EDGE to offer high-speed services. However the company will now limit investment in the 2.75G platform and will only roll out further where network usage stats show it is viable. That said, the company has confirmed it is in discussions with a number of 3G licensees with a view to becoming an MVNO. At the end of March 2005 People’s had 1.16 million customers.
