Slovak fixed line market looks set to take off

23 May 2005

Thousands of Slovakian individuals could soon benefit from sector liberalisation in the country following the announcement that seven alternative operators have signed interconnection agreements with former monopoly Slovak Telecom. The seven are Amtel, E-Tel, Dial Telecom, Globaltel, Slovanet, Nextra and railways operator Zeleznicne Telekomunikacie. Newcomers have struggled to gain a toehold in the fixed line market despite the sector being liberalised several years ago. Start-ups complained that the initial interconnect contracts being offered by Slovak Telecom were ‘highly disadvantageous and discriminatory’. However the incumbent has reworked its proposals and the alternative telcos find the terms more reasonable if not ideal.
