New DIRECTV satellite launched

A Russian Proton-M rocket carrying the US DIRECTV8 telecommunications satellite has been launched from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan. The new satellite has a service life of 15 years and will provide selectable medium and high power Ku-band broadcast services to the US on up to 32 transponders. The satellite, built by Space Systems/Loral, carries both Ku-band and Ka-band payloads; its final operating position is 101 degrees West longitude.
