19 May 2005

The Tanzanian mobile operator Celtel has signed an agreement with Ericsson for the expansion and upgrade of its GSM network. The contract includes the provision of GPRS equipment and will also improve the coverage and capacity of the existing GSM system. Celtel Tanzania is owned by the Netherlands-based pan-African cellco Celtel International, which last month accepted a USD3.4 billion takeover offer from MTC Kuwait. Celtel has around 320,000 subscribers in Tanzania and more than six million across Africa.
