Government split over ICE reform bill

18 May 2005

A bill intended to increase the competitiveness of Costa Rican telecoms monopoly ICE has caused a parliamentary divide, according to BNamericas. Prominent government spokesmen feel the proposed legislation, granting ICE priority in the awarding of mobile and other licences, will impede the future introduction of new competition. Other MPs have disagreed, arguing that if concessions are awarded fairly by the legislative assembly there will be no anti-competitive concerns.
