Incumbent accused of price hikes on the sly

12 May 2005

Macedonia’s dominant fixed line telco Makedonski Telekomunikacii (MT) has been accused of hiking its tariffs without seeking approval from the country’s regulator. The operator increased the prices of international calls to some countries, including Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia, by as much as 40% from 1 May. For its part, MT says that the hikes are necessary due to changes in the zonal distribution of some countries for billing purposes. The country’s Telecommunications Administration is investigating the matter after confirming that it was not informed of any price alterations by MT and that the telco may have broken the rules of its concession.
