Regulator looking to open up 450MHz band

Despite CDMA operators calling for the allocation of wireless spectrum in the 1900MHz band, the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is instead preparing to open up the 450MHz band for the first time, claiming that the additional frequency will lead to a better quality of service for CDMA users and help to decongest mobile networks. Earlier this month the regulator revealed plans to allocate spectrum in the IMT-2000 2GHz frequency band for both GSM and CDMA wireless operators intending to launch 3G networks, and said that spectrum in the IMT-2000 and 1900MHz bands would not be released simultaneously as this would cause network interference, leading to high infrastructure upgrade costs.
