DoCoMo reports first ever loss

10 May 2005

NTT DoCoMo has reported its first quarterly loss in operating profit for its fiscal fourth quarter to the end of March 2005, and has forecast a worse-than-expected profit gain for next year. The cellco attributed the loss to heavy costs incurred during the quarter to promote its 3G offering. Net losses for the period stood at JPY8.97 billion (USD85 million), compared with a profit of JPY155.8 billion at the same time the previous year. Consolidated operating profit fell to JPY784.17 billion from JPY1.1 trillion a year earlier, while revenue fell 4% to JPY4.84 trillion. DoCoMo has forecast an operating profit of JPY810 billion (USD7.66 billion) for fiscal 2005/06, compared with analyst estimates of around JPY843.3 million. The cellco ended March with 48.8 million customers.
