FT to be barred from Bezeq tender?

9 May 2005

Sources within the Israeli government suggest that France Télécom (FT) may be barred from participating in the forthcoming tender for the acquisition of a controlling interest in Bezeq. According to Israeli news source Globes Online, the French telco was due to take 6% of the controlling interest in the telco as part of Beny Alagem’s Whitepoint Communications Holdings, equivalent to 1.5% of the company. However, Israel’s Security Agency objected to FT participating, as it is known to have a number of interests in Arab communications companies, and because it is controlled by a foreign government. Bids for Bezeq must be submitted by tomorrow’s deadline, following which the Ministries of Finance and Communications will decide whether to accept the winning bid or open negotiations to improve it.
