3 May 2005

Russian mobile group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has contracted German vendor Siemens to supply network equipment for the expansion of its GSM/GPRS infrastructure in the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. The USD265 million deal will provide for the delivery and installation of new base stations and the upgrade of existing switches with new hardware and software. In recent years MTS has pursued an aggressive domestic acquisition in an attempt to become Russia’s first truly national operator, whilst also expanded into other countries including the neighbouring states of Belarus, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
