Telefónica expands 3G network

29 Apr 2005

Spain’s Telefónica Móviles has contracted the French equipment manufacturer Alcatel to supply 3G radio base stations. Alcatel says its Evolium Node I base stations are particularly suited to indoor environments such as office blocks, shopping centres, underground car parks and subway stations. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Telefónica is Spain’s largest cellular operator, with just under 19 million subscribers and 50% of the country’s mobile market at the end of 2004. It launched pre-commercial UMTS services in October 2003.
