Acer denies interest in Siemens

Taiwanese electronics group Acer has put paid to the rumours that it is looking to acquire the mobile handset division of Germany’s Siemens by telling Dow Jones Newswire that ‘such a possibility is completely ruled out.’ Acer, best known for its computer products, moved quickly to dispel the stories after German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that the two companies were at an advanced stage of negotiations over the weekend. ‘We have never been in talks with Siemens to seek any partnership or merger and acquisition,’ said Acer senior director Henry Wang. Siemens chiefs have admitted that they might sell, close or restructure the company’s unprofitable handset division after it faced continued losses in the final quarter of last year and lost its number four spot in the global market to LG Electronics.
