The growth in Ecuador’s mobile market is continuing unabated in 2005 according to figures released by the country’s telecoms regulator Suptel. At the end of March Ecuador’s three service providers had a combined subscriber base of 4.05 million, up from 3.45 million at the end of 2004 and just under 2.4 million twelve months before that. Market leader Porta, which is backed by América Móvil, had 2.63 million customers, around 230,000 of which were post-paid. The Telefónica subsidiary Movistar, which the Spanish company acquired from BellSouth last year, had almost 1.3 million subscribers, 21% of which were contract users. The newest and smallest player, Alegro, which was launched by Telecsa in December 2003, had 140,640 customers, with less than 30,000 on post-paid contracts.
