Jazztel boosted by ADSL performance

20 Apr 2005

The Spanish fixed line operator Jazztel has signed a contract with the Chinese equipment supplier Huawei Technologies for an upgrade to its ADSL network which will enable it to offer speeds of up to 20Mbps. The telco says a recent advertising campaign helped it boost ADSL subscriber numbers in the first quarter from just 9,000 to 50,000, and it is currently adding between 4,000 and 5,000 new clients a week. Jazztel’s chairman, Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, who acquired a controlling 24.9% interest in the company last September, has denied press speculation that he might offload his stake after a recent rise in the telco’s share price. He says he is committed to staying on as chairman until at least 2012.
