Telecom hopes for bigger slice of the IT pie

Telecom New Zealand plans to secure a larger slice of the country’s NZD2 billion IT market and in the process hopes to entice customers by offering a one-stop-shop for telecoms and web-related services. Mark Ratcliffe, Telecom’s chief information officer, said ‘IT is an important part of Telecom’s future growth, and we just want to make sure we retain and grow our customers as technologies converge and their needs change’. The incumbent acquired local web services companies Gen-I and Computerland NZ for NZD90 million last year and believes the time is right to expand its business into new market areas as the convergence of technologies such as voice, data and video onto one network makes it an important growth sector.
