State keen to let the fingers do the walking

China’s fifth largest telco, China TieTong Telecom, says it will publish its Shanghai Yellow Pages on 1 July 2005, pre-empting other major operators which are expected to launch their own versions of the famous telephone directory in what is seen as an underdeveloped sector of the Chinese market. TieTong Telecom plans to issue 500,000 copies of the new directory in 2005/06 – the first time that any Chinese company has ventured into this area of the market – and it hopes to generate fresh revenues in the face of stiffening competition in the fixed line, mobile and low-cost wireless phone segments. China Netcom has set up an independent Yellow Pages Company with plans to create eight subsidiaries in the southern provinces to distribute copies, while China Unicom held a large-scale distribution of free copies two weeks ago.
